Get to know Liz Rubino, Media Relations Coordinator

Public relations is all about relationships—the people behind the stories. That’s why we’re offering this blog series all about our team members. This isn’t about our professional accomplishments but who we are as people. We hope you have as much fun reading along as we do interviewing each other.

1. What got you interested in public relations?

I started out my career after graduating from college as a radiologic technologist. After my first child was born, I was a stay-at-home mom to my four children for many years. Our good friends across the street had six kids and they were friends with our kids. In 2007, Gary (the founder of Kimball Hughes PR and our good friend across the street), asked me if I would like to come and work for him. So here I am, 15 years later working in public relations.

2. Tell us about your favorite movie and what appeals most to you about it?

I have always liked movies that Robin Williams has been in and the variety of characters he has played. One of my favorite movies is Mrs. Doubtfire. He is a father who loves his kids and does just about anything to make sure he is a part of their lives each day. Although everything changes within the structure of the family, they were able to come together, compromise and still be a family, just in a different way.

3. What was the last, best book you read and what about it spoke to you?

I like to read mysteries and one author I enjoy is Agatha Christie. Murder on the Orient Express is one of my favorites that takes place on a train that has had to stop due to heavy snow. One of the main characters is detective Hercule Poirot, who appeared in many of Christie’s novels. He  is precise with his methods he uses to solve crimes and not shy in letting everyone know.

4. Tell us about a meaningful hobby or “outside of work” commitment that is important to you?

Becoming a mom has been one of the best parts of my life and now I am a grandmother for the first time. My 2-year-old grandson always puts a smile on my face. He has a great personality and is quite the character. I look forward to spending time with him each week.

5. Share a fun fact about you.

I moved to Florida after I got married and my husband signed me up for scuba diving classes without my knowledge. I was very nervous about taking the classes, but I ended up enjoying the lessons and being best in class on my test. I only got to go diving four times, but each time I enjoyed the experience and the beauty under the water.

Kimball Communications welcomes tourism, politico PR professional

Addition of Mark Ladley adds to Philly agency’s travel and tourism expertise

Kimball Communications (www.kimballpr.com) today announced it has added Mark Ladley to its team of public relations professionals. Ladley joins the agency as public relations manager and is responsible for managing client accounts, including strategic planning, media relations, social media advising and crisis consulting.

Mark Ladley headshotPrior to joining Kimball Communications, Ladley honed his PR expertise in travel and tourism, as well as political communications, at boutique agencies and in state politics. Most recently at En Route Marketing in Philadelphia, he successfully developed relationships with journalists and bloggers to bolster clients’ reputations in the travel and tourism market. Prior to that, Ladley was communications director for Pa. Rep. Brendan Boyle, developing messaging and public relations strategies that led to significant media placements and high-profile press conferences. He began his career in communications working for esteemed pollster and political pundit, Frank Luntz.

“As we continue to grow our agency, Mark’s experience in B2B and travel and tourism PR is a complementary and welcome addition to the work we do,” says Gary Kimball, president of Kimball Communications. “I’m looking forward to the positive results he’ll produce for our clients, both current and future.”

A resident of Lansdale, Pa. in Montgomery County, Ladley is deeply involved in his local community, serving as a member of the Lansdale Communications Commission, the Philadelphia Public Relations Association and The Penn Club. He earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in politics from The Citadel and the University of Glasgow, respectively.

Ladley is the most recent addition to the Kimball Communications team since the agency’s move to the Philadelphia region earlier this year. The agency is currently celebrating its 20th year in business.

20-year-old PR agency opens new office in Blue Bell

Kimball Communications Marks Anniversary with New Montgomery County Location

Marking its 20th anniversary in business this July, public relations firm Kimball Communications announces it is opening a new office at 794 Penllyn Pike, Suite 214 in Blue Bell, Pa. The agency will begin working from its new offices on Aug. 3.

Kimball Communications provides a full array of public relations services, including branded content and social media. It has also developed a specialty in crisis communications. The agency serves organizations in a wide array of industries with specialties in insurance and financial services, trade association, healthcare, manufacturing, real estate and sustainable energy.

“After 20 years in business, most of our client work is national and international rather than regional,” says Gary Kimball, president of Kimball Communications. “However we have a number of clients in the Philadelphia region that make it advantageous for us to be in Montgomery County. We’re looking forward to moving into the new space.”

Over the last two decades, Kimball says one constant has been the need for businesses to tell compelling stories. “As we developed expertise in social media, video and branded content for our clients over the years, the fundamentals of public relations haven’t changed. We just have new tools, better tools, to tell those stories.”

Kimball says moving closer to Philadelphia will provide the space needed to recruit more regional clients as well as better accessibility for clients flying to the region from around the U.S.

The agency previously was located in Easton, Pa.

Health Care Council of Lehigh Valley Chooses Kimball Communications

Collective of five hospital systems hires PR agency for strategic communications project

EASTON, Pa. — The Health Care Council of Lehigh Valley (HCC), consisting of Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Hospital, KidsPeace Mental Health Network, Lehigh Valley Health Network, Sacred Heart HealthCare System, St. Luke’s University Health Network,
and the Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust, has hired Kimball Communications to develop a strategic communications plan related to the group’s recently completed Joint Community Health Needs Assessment. The assessment was required as a provision of the U.S. Affordable Care Act.

The 18-year-old Lehigh Valley agency will work with HCC to create a communications framework to best serve the goals of the assessment. Those goals include coordinating the resources of the five health systems around pressing community health needs and identifying the most effective means of informing and educating those communities.

“Communicating the findings of the Health Needs Assessment is of critical importance to our region,” explained Ron Dendas, a spokesperson for the Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust, which is funding the communications project. “Bringing an agency like Kimball Communications in to identify resources, streamline communication among our partners and ensure our communities are reached is vital to the success of this joint effort. This will allow HCC to focus on better health, while Kimball Communications focuses on the most effective means to reach our communities.”

“For nearly two decades our agency has worked in health care communications, and our team is honored HCC selected us as their partner,” said Gary Kimball, president of Kimball Communications. “HCC’s work will play a key role in promoting a stronger, healthier Lehigh Valley, and Kimball Communications is eager to help in that effort.”

Natural Products/Health Foods Division Launched at Expo East

Kimball Communications today announced the launch of a new natural products/healthy foods division, a move designed to clearly define Kimball’s specialization in this growing industry.

With a formal launch planned for Jan. 1, 2014, Kimball began discussions this week with clients at Natural Products Expo East in Baltimore.

“The natural products space is still an emerging market and public relations and social media are ideal strategies for companies to build trust and brand loyalty among consumers,” said Rod Hughes, vice president at Kimball Communications. “Natural products are almost never impulse purchases. They are selected with great intention, so coverage by the media can be the third-party endorsement consumers are looking for when evaluating purchases.”

Social media is also an effective way for natural product consumers to share their stories – and an opportunity for companies to put their brand story in the hands of the consumer, Hughes said.

“When Rod Hughes joined us a year and a half ago he brought very valuable natural products experience and public relations success with brands that are now nationally known,” said agency president Gary Kimball. “Expo East is a perfect time for us to launch a natural products division.

“Public relations gets beyond labels and gives brands the opportunity to talk about unique ingredients or certifications that distinguish the brand while also educating consumers about the healthy product marketplace,” Kimball said. “This engenders trust and loyalty because natural product consumers do lots of research before they buy. It also helps build a distribution network by demonstrating to retailers a brand is in the public eye.

Lehigh Valley Manufacturer Turns to Kimball Communications
for Public Relations, Social Media Services

Ecopax, a leading manufacturer of single-use takeout containers based in the Lehigh Valley, has hired Kimball Communications to handle its public relations efforts as well as to develop a strategy for Ecopax to enter the social media space.

“Technology, lean manufacturing practices and productivity innovation have converged to create what is now a really dynamic period in U.S. manufacturing,” said Gary Kimball, president of Kimball Communications. “Our goal is to partner with Ecopax to help educate consumers and tell the story of this inventive Pennsylvania manufacturer.”

Formed in 2007, Ecopax employs approximately 75 employees and offers a diverse product line of foam, paper and plastic containers customized to meet the needs of the food service and consumer industries. Using its propriety, closed-loop system, Ecopax ensures 100 percent of its materials are used to produce consumer-ready products. In just five years, Ecopax has captured substantial market share among national chains, distribution and retail market segments. The core strength of Ecopax is its ability to increase customers’ supply chain efficiency through product customization.

“Because we live in a world that is increasingly on-the-go, Americans demand safe, affordable and sanitary food packaging options – at coffee shops, salad bars, take-out restaurants and grocery stores. Our diverse product line offers ideal solutions to these needs, and we look forward to working with the team at Kimball Communications to share our story,” said Christina Wong, vice president of operations for Ecopax.
